If you're storing anything battery-powered (flashlight, radio, etc.) as part of your emergency supplies, don't store it with alkaline batteries inside. When they inevitably leak, they'll damage or destroy the device. Much better to rubber-band them to the outside.

Damage done by leaky alkaline batteries *may* be repairable if it only leaked on the battery contacts.Get some q-tips and vinegar (I have some industrial strength white vinegar that I use for this) and use them to gently clean off the alkaline leakage. You’ll see/hear it bubble when the vinegar mixes with it.
