Fun @homelab activity of the day: I found out that Azure Email Communication Services works similar to AWS Simple Email Service, so I decided to give it a try. Took some time learning what I can do with it and how to deploy with Terraform. Then had to figure out how to deploy a Postfix mail relay as a Kubernetes service. Finally, I configured various services (like Forgejo) to use the relay. It was a very long day, but it was fun. Lots of new things learned.
@homelab Okay, someone asked a fair question: why a mail relay?
Both Azure and AWS (probably GCP as well) built their email services to be used by an app hosted on the platform itself. So, in order to send from outside, you need to use authenticated SMTP (with TLS, obviously).
Since I don't want to go through the trouble of configuring each of my home lab apps with SMTP authentication, I just configured a Postfix relay for that. This way my apps can send internally to the relay (with TLS as well), which will forward to Azure, which will make the final delivery.
It's not a requirement, it's simply an implementation choice.
And in case anyone would like to spin up such a relay, I have used this Helm Chart below.
