Do any of the #Linux people know of a way I can always send silent audio to a particlar output when that output isn't playing anything? I used to have something like that, but I can't at all remember how I did it.

Use Case - I have an HDMI display with speakers, and the audio goes to sleep nearly INSTANTLY when no sound. The next thing to make sound gets a couple seconds lopped off the beginning. I want to keep it awake. I use that display for videos.

@hellomiakoda On PulseAudio (or any PulseAudio-compatible audio server) you should be able to use the following command:

      pacat -d DEVICE -p /dev/zero

You can get a list of names for DEVICE with this command:

      pactl list sinks

(It might be possible to solve the problem more thoroughly by disabling the power-saving feature of the audio device in a config file somewhere, I've done that before, but option that may not be available for all devices)
