    He is right: "Currently, the web is lacking in compassion, but this is not a human failing. This is a design issue."

    "The algorithms that make social media so compelling have harmful consequences and should be regulated, argues Tim Berners-Lee, who invented the web."

      @serapath which other projects do you like and think have more potential than solid?

      @tchambers imho he had his fame and chances and was the director of the w3c for a long time but failed to design the right protections. his latest project solid pods takes a lot of attention away from much better projects that actually could deliver what solid pods cant. So while problems are obvious - the big question is more like where to look for solutions 🤷♀️

      @tchambers

      the proper way out would be "public key addressed" data, where a "pod provider" is similar to a "bittorrent seeder" making sure the dataset is available, but no pod provider is authoritative and more providers means more safety/redundancy/protection against any single provider ceasing their service.

      a keypair ownwr could always sign new updates to their existing datasets.

      this exists in dat @dat_ecosystem which started in 2013, but without more funding things move slow

      there is nothing ready - the questiin is what is the right approach.

      pods are federated. you chose and maybe transition to a different pod provider, but either ways, its always just one pod provider and if people dont want to risk their data they better use a big secure pod provider so they can trust they do proper backups and wont unexpectedly shutting down. this happens often with fediverse instances
