A lot of people complaining about how low the Anthropic settlement is seem to have absolutely no idea how little authors actually make in royalties.

Hint: for anyone in the bottom 50% of popularity, the Anthropic settlement will be the majority of the total lifetime income from the book. For anyone outside the top 1%, it will be a significant fraction of the total income.

@david_chisnall it’s not only how much the writers will earn. Part of the whole fine system is that it should give a strong message to others, it should scare away others from doing the same. 1.5bln is small potatoes in their overall costs. Will that stopping Samuel Altman or mark Zuckerberg from doing the same now? They can laugh at this sum. It’s nothing for them.

@david_chisnall It's low in the sense that it's like 1% of what the letter of the law entitles them to, and where the letter should have been applied because of how egregious, intentional, and exploitative the infringement was.
