The fact that it took so long to remove bcachefs from the Kernel due to Kent Overstreet is strong evidence that we were better off when Torvalds was a giant asshole, it probably would have gotten resolved in a few days instead of dragging it out for years

@sun I like that Torvalds still has enough pull to do this autocratically. I fear once he retires or dies there will be fractions of FSFbro kernel and trans-kernel and right-wing kernel and corpo-kernel

@bsdphk if you ever read this comment, I want you to know that I'm a big fan of your article, for it very well summarises the feeling I'm having every time I'm forced to deal with modern programming.

@meeper @sun haven't you read stable-api-nonsense.rst? It's been in the kernel since forever.

      https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/process/stable-api-nonsense.rst

Every time I see this nonsense, it reminds me of PHK's quote from A Generation Lost in the Bazaar:

That is the sorry reality of the bazaar Raymond praised in his book: a pile of old festering hacks, endlessly copied and pasted by a clueless generation of IT "professionals" who wouldn't recognize sound IT architecture if you hit them over the head with it.

@newt @sun What's the bullshit reasoning to suppprt breaking the ABI every release?

      That just sounds asinine

@sun that too, but if Linux had a stable API, one could rather easily maintain drivers outside of the kernel. If you look into ZFS source code, they maintain an enormous compatibility layer for different versions of the kernel because almost every major and even some minor versions break API in some way. Generally, this is why you don’t see many third party drivers for Linux, unlike other systems. And this is why every Android vendor dumps a custom kernel that’s impossible to maintain instead of providing a Board Support Package compatible with more than one kernel version.

Linux has been a disaster for open source operating systems. I passionately hate it with all my soul.

        Linux-libre
According to the Free Software Foundation Latin America, Linux-libre is a modified version of the Linux kernel that contains no binary blobs, obfuscated code, or code released under proprietary licenses. In the Linux kernel, those types of code are mostly used for proprietary firmware images. While generally redistributable, they do not give the user the freedom to audit, modify, or, consequently, redistribute their modified versions. The GNU Project keeps Linux-libre in synchronization with the mainline Linux kernel. History The Linux kernel started to include binary blobs in 1996. The work to clear out the binary blobs began in 2006 with gNewSense's find-firmware and gen-kernel. This work was taken further by the BLAG Linux distribution in 2007 when deblob and Linux-libre was born. Linux-libre was first released by the Free Software Foundation Latin America (FSFLA), then endorsed by the Free Software Foundation (FSF) as a valuable component for the totally free Linux distributions. It became a GNU package in March 2012. Alexandre Oliva is the project maintainer. ...
