     X-forwarding sends so much raw data it's not suitable for over the internet (until fiber and low latency... hello!) but we used to get around this with things like NX (No Machine) which is a layer in the middle that handles compression and optimization.

     Current situation: X-forwarding (remember that?) a browser from a remote server so I can download a file on that server without having to first download it locally and re-uploading it.

     X-forwarding was such a cool idea, I wish it worked over the internet. Only ever got it working reliably on LAN, back in the day.
