   So, what went right this week? Well, in the global race to reclaim the realm from motor vehicles, the Finnish capital has chalked up a big win: the city just went an entire year without a single road death. The feat follows a years-long mission to make its streets safer. Speed limits have been lowered, cycle lanes have been laid, and improvements made to public transport to reduce car dependency – a “people-first approach to mobility” that appears to be paying off.

     Speaking of persistence paying off, the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition teased some of its most striking entries this week. Many of the photographers behind them waited hours to capture the right moment and the results are not just a visual delight. Launched alongside the Natural History Museum in London’s pioneering Biodiversity Intactness Index, which tracks international progress towards conservation goals, they add much-needed urgency to protecting the natural world.
