I kind of want to do a long series where I take various tropes in genre fic, particularly fantasy, (things like “dwarves are scottish” and “dragons eat princesses”) and try to trace the exact family tree of who inspired who for each.

these tropes are stupid and a discredit to art and the creative spirit btw. -especially- the parodies/spin. like a dog chasing its tail. write things that you believe in, I’m begging you.

what’s wild to me is that I’m pretty sure there are more insincere parodies (or ~feminist spins~) on the princess+knight+dragon trope than there are legitimate sources played straight

@clarity Apparently the earliest known complaint that "The butler did it" was cliche predates the earliest known mystery where the culprit was the butler

I'd be interested to know if there were earlier lost works (not many people saved pulp mysteries I guess) or if someone started making a joke about it that then eclipsed the actual bodies of work

@clarity Robert Newton's portrayal of Long John Silver in Disney's Treasure Island (1950) is basically where "pirates talk with a West Country accent" came from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treasure_Island_(1950_film)

        Treasure Island (1950 film)
Treasure Island is a 1950 adventure film produced by RKO-Walt Disney British Productions, adapted from Robert Louis Stevenson's 1883 novel of the same name. Directed by Byron Haskin, it stars Bobby Driscoll as Jim Hawkins and Robert Newton as Long John Silver. Treasure Island was Disney's first completely live-action film and the first screen version of Treasure Island made in color. It was filmed in the United Kingdom on location and at Denham Film Studios, Buckinghamshire. Newton's portrayal of Long John Silver has been influential on the portrayal of pirates in pop culture.
