Mmmmm garage sale cotton sheet and a brick stew, my favorite. Way overshot target temp of 110F, turned off the burner and will just let it sit. Only needs to go for an hour per the random websites, and only 10 min per the manufacturer of the soap. Synthrapol plus soda ash. #stew #dyeing #flir

***full of steaming sumac leaves, extracting tannins. Those tannins are going into another container tomorrow for another step, then the soda ash goes into the pot with the fabric(s) tomorrow for the first step....

Step 0. (tomorrow) is actually to "scour" the cotton, which involves boiling the cotton with soda ash. I may pull out the respirator for all of these, actually. Breathing caustic steam probably not a great thing. 🤔

Dyeing Cotton With Cochineal — Shepherd Textiles
        from Seth Reed
We’ve been working on our recipe for dyeing rich magenta colors on cotton using cochineal. The key is to let the cotton dry completely between each step of tanning and mordanting.

      So plan is

      1. Scour the cotton for a few sheets (probably think I can cram in two sheets into that pot, maybe three).

      2. Pour out the dirty soda ash water and swap in the tannin water... let it soak overnight.

      3. Dry the sheets for a few days to completely dry (depending on heat/humidity here)

      4. Mordant bath the cotton.

      5. Wait another 2 days for drying.

      6. Dye bath using cochineal. I wonder if we have cream of tartar 🤔

      7. Dry again for a day or so

      8. Wash in Synthrapol to fix (theoretically).

Sumac tea draining into a bucket through an old window screen. Recipe calls for 10% sumac extract by weight of fabric, but since I have no clue to the tannin composition or percent tannins I was able to extract, just going to go for as little added water as possible to keep cotton wet overnight. Might put a brick on top and not n dilute. Still waiting for supplies before the next step, scouring cotton, then the tannin soak. #dyeing

Sumac tea (for dyeing). Really dark, which I hope is a good indicator of the tannin confent. #dyeing
