Michael Gerson is dead at age 58. I disagreed with most of his positions throughout my life, and he shared responsibility for Bush’s invasion of Iraq, but he was always so damned sincere and utterly free of the mean-spiritedness that defines today’s GOP. A month or two ago, I shared a column of his in which he confessed to an epiphany that the GOP had long been genuinely racist.
