1. Against that backdrop, the story is less about the failure of any one chatbot — though all these stories are tragic — and more about the collective risks presented by the technology in general. Already, 72 percent of American teens say they use chatbots as companions, and one-eighth say they have sought "emotional or mental health support." Surely some of those teens are receiving real and useful support. But some unknown number of others are now facing the same risks that Adam Raine did. And Silicon Valley is only beginning to reckon with how to keep them safe.
