and it is not one that is present in later modern IRC english, my native english dialect.

someone should be studying this.
I assume plenty of people are, actually. IRC logs exist going back decades, showing how people talked then.

there were a bunch of those channels with a bunch of people on your efnets and dalnets, and they had a strict netiquette around capitalizing names correctly: you capitalize them how the user has entered their name, and no other way. tab complete defaults to doing that in most clients

I think that just leaked out into the wider IRC world and became a standard feature of Later Modern IRC English.

also I have a theory about the names being the only thing capitalized: I think it's because of the BDSM kinksters. they had a thing about capitalization of names because they're using capitalization as external signalling: dominants have UppercaseNames, submissives have lowercasenames{UN}

I often write in a slightly more formal dialect with the correct capitalization, I'm well familiar with it, but when I am just talking?
I speak IRC english: capitalization isn't used (for this). we don't respect Formal Nouns

someday I'll write more about Late Modern IRC English. I talked about it in a tumblr post once about how I was writing a character to talk in an exaggerated "what if this movement kept going for another 50 years" kind of hypothetical Future IRC English, but it'd be useful to try and describe features of it.

I've once fixed it. but it's one of those things where it's easy-but-annoying to fix in one application. it's a lot harder to keep this shit working across platforms and versions and all that. so recently I just ignore the problem and seethe.

anyway I've been mad at the incorrect-capitalization-is-marked-as-misspelled issue since, like, 2005?

@cxberger god I'd love a spellchecker that could tell me which letter is spelled wrong

@foone spellchecker that exclusively gives info in that format. does not tell you where the letter should be, just that you messed it up. completely unusable for any word longer than like 10 letters

and sometimes I misspell words because I assume it's mad that I didn't capitalize it, but it actually means "germeny is spelled with an 'a' "

because again, I type a lot. I type sloppy and fast*, and I'd love to not have to take my hands off the keyboard to right click and adjust the word I misspelled. But I don't know any spellchecker engines that do this and it'd be a slight nightmare to hack in
* I'm legally required to make the joke "like I make love *eyebrows*"

while I'm ranting about spellchecker features I want:
I want a keyboard key for "replace the last incorrect spelled word with the top result" -

also, since I was reminded, another feature of late modern IRC english: it uses *roleplay* and smilies :), not emoji. They don't exist yet, and unicode barely works most places.

@foone Huh interesting, on my side of things unicode has been fine for something like ~8 years where the last channels I knew using stuff like latin-1 finally switched to utf-8.
8 years being of course still quite recent given IRC's age.
But people still tend to avoid unicode emojis in IRC, but I think it's mostly because those renders very badly in small fonts specially monochrome ones.
