   My two cents on Gavin Newsom: He's an opportunist who is good at finding a popular cause to get out in front of to make himself look like a leader. This is not unusual for politicians - he's just unusually good at it. But if he can use us and our causes to advance his personal goals, we can use him and his political power to advance our causes. You don't have to like him or trust him to use him to win a fight. This is the nature of politics. We can support Newsom fighting Trumpism without erasing our objections to him or supporting him in future elections. And if we want to be able to argue about who should be President in the future, we really must prioritize defeating Trump and authoritarianism right now, by any means necessary.

     @joshsusser I feel you. I still favor Harris, if she'll run again. And I've dreamed of a Michelle Obama candidacy since 2012.

     @phaedral @joshsusser who cares about 2028 right now, it's three years away. If Democrats don't get their shit together ASAP we may not even have a fair election then. I like Harris, but she lost against the worst candidate in modern history. We need someone new who doesn't rely on consultants to tell them what to say.

     @phaedral I can't even guess what the electoral situation will be like then, and I'm not much of a pundit anyway, so no predictions today. But I agree Newsom has to be considered a strong contender. I'd really like an option that's not a rich, cishet, white man, but I'll take what I can get.

     @joshsusser So much damning-with-faint-praise. Who do you see poised to maybe beat the GOP candidate in2028? Not who do you like, but who might actually do the job? I think Newsom's name goes in that hat.
