    #proxmox “Keep the host clean”

Also #proxmox “yeah btw q35 pci passthrough is broken atm. lol sorry”

v9 has really made me think about looking elsewhere for something like it. theres a lot it gets right but v9 is proving hard to love as the project (probably unsurprisingly given the vmware stuff) is lurching towards enterprises.

i have literally run proxmox almost non stop since 8 years everywhere. perhaps i should give it a break and chill and also not upgrade to .0 on “pseudo prod” homelab machines.

@badnetmask @ironicbadger KubeVirt has been a very surprising powerhouse of a project.

From Live Migrations. To Tekton support. Confidential computing. And even Kubernetes RBAC for VMs.

While at first it just looks like a "Kubernetes, but also with some VMs", it could actually be a serious contender for just VM management.

https://harvesterhci.io/ is a complete Kubernetes package with a webui including KubeVirt. Makes it easy to at least try out with preselected components.

@badnetmask @ironicbadger My guess is that the experimental feature is the UI itself. Under the hood it should be Elemental https://elemental.docs.rancher.com/architecture running k3s/RKE2, which are both rock solid.

If that label is a problem however, you could deploy Talos Linux or Elemental yourself into some VMs, and use Harvester as a proxmox distro directly.

Alternatively. You can also install Talos Linux on the host, and install your own storage interface (like ZFS drivers) and KubeVirt yourself. KubeVirt is really a glorified interface and manager on top of libvirt XML files.

@badnetmask Also another thing that shocks me is that #Harvester has changed out its base distrobution away from K3OS to the enterprise licensed SLE Micro?? Especially shocking given that its an open source project, and the ease of availablity of both MicroOS and LeapMicro.

There is reassurances that users of Harvester will not need to license or register this copy of SLE when expicitly used under Harvester. But this is under an enterprise license and very much not open source, directly conflicting with crieria 8 "License Must Not Be Specific to a Product" of the OSI definition of open source.

This is a real black mark on a project i otherwise thought highly of.
