From Your Local Epidemiologist: “If you’re under 65 and not high risk, the window to get a Covid-19 vaccine is right now—before the FDA label changes (possibly this Friday). Once it happens, access will be limited immediately.”

Note: COVID hasn’t changed that much recently, so while they will be updating the vaccine in fall to match the latest variants, the current “old” vaccine should still provide good protection (and better than no vaccine if access is restricted).

And yes, many places have already pulled the current COVID vaccine so YMMV, and best to check pharmacies in your local area on how they are implementing policies (it’s a mess).

Worth factoring in your vaccine timing calculations: Many people have conditions that would qualify them as higher risk for COVID and therefore eligible for the updated vaccine, BUT they may change this list and make it much more restricted when they change the FDA label. https://www.cdc.gov/covid/risk-factors/index.html

It’s honestly ridiculous and horrific that we all need to make these complicated calculations to figure out when to get our next COVID vaccine.

COVID vaccines should be accessible to anyone who wants them every year (like flu vaccines) and all year round.

For those asking about Novavax, this was fully approved by the FDA in May but only in adults 65 and older – or those 12 to 64 who have at least one health problem that puts them at increased risk from COVID-19. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/amp/health/fda-approves-novavax-covid-19-vaccine-but-with-unusual-restrictions-on-its-use

FDA approves Novavax COVID-19 vaccine, but with unusual restrictions on its use
In its Friday approval letter, the FDA didn’t explain the restrictions although they reflect skepticism about vaccines from Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and other Trump officials.
