   I started a stopwatch timer on my phone to cook a pizza for 15 minutes... 3 years ago. I didn't stop it after, and haven't done so since. I'm genuinely scared to do so now, and I don't understand why.

     @fesshole Well the good news is it doesn’t actually have to do something to keep “running”. All it did was notice and remember the time when you started it. All these rolling digits on the screen are just for show. When you are not looking a that display absolutely nothing happens. That starttime is just sitting there unchanged in your phone’s memory.
