   it seems like "moderate progressives" are getting upset and worried that they are seeing their power slip away because obvious dumb moves like this.
   
   The outer level thing that is intriguing is that par covfefe, they've gotten this way because their machine runs on, essentially what turns out to have been USAID.
   
   What this means is that what people have been complaining about "the right doesn't pay people!" has a flip side of the coin - that when you do pay people, in politics it can have a peter principle kind of effect where the types of people that colonize these moderately unimportant but critical spots are the most deranged people in the society ( as opposed to those that do it for free at least are mildly functional )
   
   So why the left was able to grab a ton of power by paying their activists, when they optimized everything including getting the government to pay for them to own the government ( pretty sweet hack ) - they also cause a "consuming own propaganda" moment.

     @Rocket Indeed, that's because with National Review and Buckley their whole point was to move the "right" to the "left"; perhaps they had good intentions of "we need to focus everything on defeating communism, so must jettision everything else" - but I'm not a believer in that.

     @sickburnbro Republicans have been purging fringe right-wing groups since the 60s. One of the first victims was the birchers (The John Birch Society). It was a huge mistake to purge a popular anti-communist group. The birchers have been proven right about fluoride, one of the primary issues they were mocked for.

I know it goes way deeper into stuff we thought was benign.
