Scarabus reaches into thin air, grabs ahold of a bell pull suspended in thin air, pulls it twice, and summons... Lenore!? No! A merely similar-looking young lady, just as quickly dismissed again as she was first summoned!
The twists and turns of this movie, really. It's like an itchy snake on a turntable set to 78rpm.

Erasmus disarms and overpowers the maniacal Grimes with bright green midair finger painting!
Grimes seems now to be restored to old self, his fit of blind murderous rage now dispelled.
Enter Rexford, Dr. Bedlo's son! The family resemblance is weak, but no weaker than between Erasmus and Estelle.

Rexford is overcome with a maniacal fit as Grimes was before him! The carriage rocks wildly, Estelle is terrified as they four horses and four humans race along a narrow path high above a crashing sea.
The music, on the other hand, plays the scene along like a merry comedy.
The fit passes as Rexford and co approach a matte painting of a foreboding castle!

Enter Boris Karloff as Dr. Scarabus, a charming and jolly host sincerely enchanted by the arrival of unexpected guests!

Second grave violation about five minutes after the first one. Heck of a track record in this film so far!

"You rang, sir?"
"Yes, Grimes, prepare the coach for immediate departure."
This Grimes is not the Grimes who dallied with Elon Musk, this is a different Grimes. Do not do a wrong Grimes.

A WILD PETER LORRE APPEARS
Vincent Price used "nod and smile at the person who definitely remembers you but whom you do not remember at all"
It is super effective!

Price just casually floating the idea of violating a familial grave. As one does.

Can you even imagine living in a house with a sub-basement this large and _not_ storing in it a pipe of Amontillado of dubious origin??
(For a sub-basement, this room is impressively dry and dusty. Excellent foundation sealing, sump pump, and HVAC/dehumidifier loop, really.)

This musical accompaniment is really working overtime to set the mood. To set some kind of mood, anyhow. I keep expecting the talking raven to be joined by a chorus of muppets.

"The young do not understand grief, Estelle. To you she was only a stepmother; to me she was..."
*Vincent Price takes a huge swig of warm milk from a dark red glass goblet*
"...my life."
("It's pronounced \"wife\", Mr. Price." "I'll say it howsoever I wish to say it, you sniveling peasant!")

Erasmus and Scarabus take turns gesturing at each other while various animated enchanter attacks flick back and forth between them. Scarabus brings out a whole-ass cannon. This scene started out like a cartoon; if it ends like the Daffy / Donald piano fight in the Ink & Paint Club in Who Framed Roger Rabbit I will be absolutely beside myself with glee.

Scarabus and Lenore lock Estelle in stocks before a roaring brazier! Scarabus menaces the helpless Estelle with a red-hot poker, entreating Erasmus to reveal the secret of his magic.
Birdlo returns surreptitiously!
Erasmus and Scarabus point blue and green finger-beams at each other while looking goofy. This is some kind of pre-duel apparently.

Dr. Bedlo lives! A cunning concealment to make Scarabus think him dead so Bedlo could... can... act without endangering others..? Truthfully they kind of glossed over the "why" of the matter just then to give Bedlo several more chances to halfheartedly berate his son Rexford.

Betrayal within betrayal: Scarabus bought Bedlo's cooperation with an offer of power to help deceive Erasmus and lure him to the castle so that Scarabus could... siphon out Erasmus's magic like a Skexi shoving gelflings into a Juicero..? I think?

Great Scott! Lenore lives, and befuddled Erasmus two years prior into believing her dead so she could dally with the rich and powerful Scarabus instead!
Betrayal! Conspiracy!

(Interesting that the place settings at Scarabus's table feature the same dark red glass goblets as held Erasmus's warm milk in the opening scene. Guess all the sorcerers in this neighbourhood shop at the same IKEA.)

(Serious worry for just a second: Peter Lorre's face is awfully close to that spinning sparkler contraption with no eye protection. Those magnesium sparks are no laughing matter.)
