Would be nice to have a way to automatically save the text one takes a screenshot of into the metadata of the screenshot.

First I thought of running it trough Frog or some other OCR – but then I remembered that the text is right there… It should just be copied in some way, right?

Is there an alt text metadata field in png, btw, that can be accessed by websites asking for alt text?

@cassidy There's obviously a big risk of misuse here, where bad actores inserts horrible, or misleading alt-texts that most people are unaware of and share without knowing, just "seen" by people using screen readers etc. @vixalientoots

@cassidy Right!? It's so time- and energy consuming to write alt texts to every picture used all the time! The obvious thing is for people to be able to write one once in the metadata and for everyone later using that picture to be able to then just automatically insert that alt text into where ever they use it (and obviously edit it if they want). Think of all the memes people share thousands of times, never with any alt text. It could just be there! @vixalientoots @GTK

@vixalientoots @forteller @GTK on iOS I think that's using OCR in the Photos app itself rather than saving it in the file metadata. But alt text metadata for image files seems… smart? If that’s not a thing, how is that not a thing?? 🤔

@forteller Currently I don’t think applications expose text to the compositor so that the text can be saved as part of the screenshot but I believe the new access kit backend in @GTK might be a stepping stone to that.

I believe storing text that is contained in screenshots is already done on platforms such as iOS, where when I search for some text, it will show up all the photos that had that text in them. Maybe that work could be integrated in GNOME
