ALERT for Bluesky Bridge Users 🚨 🦋

If you are using a Bluesky bridge on Mastodon, DO NOT TAG Mastodon accounts in your posts without prior informed consent from this person.

This could end up showing a preview of this person's profile picture and bio on Bluesky without their consent.

Additionally, be careful about how the upcoming Quote Post feature could behave with Bluesky bridges.

Some of us don't want our information shared with commercial platforms like Bluesky, and have not consented to this bridge.

This practice can even endanger some Fediverse users.

If you have chosen to share your
own data with commercial platforms, make sure you leave the same choice to others.

    This is important.

@Em0nM4stodon This is going to continue to cause problems. I think we should stop using the bridge. Bluesky's choice to use a different protocol is problematic. The policing should be at their end. Everyone here should not need to restrict the normal way we interact because of a billionaire's choice to develop something contrary. We should not have to conform to whatever the billionaires cook up. This makes people here wish they weren't, and that's cha-ching for capitalists with too much money and power. The bridge is suddenly making rules for users of mastodon.

@adelinej @Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange setting your account to private and posting followers-only will prevent your content from being visible to others.

@Em0nM4stodon Is there something to do with our Mastodon account to avoid this? I’m guessing not?

@Em0nM4stodon Thank you for this PSA! I saw the fallout from this event and it's truly a sad case of mismanaged expectations.

Since I do bridge both my Mastodon accounts I'm trying to figure out how to handle this now. I guess ideally I'd only want posts of mine that do not reference other Mastodon users to get bridged, possibly with the addition that posts mentioning others would be bridged if (and only if) those users themselves are using the bridge.

I do believe a technical solution will [also] be needed since it's going to be impossible for everyone to remember to ask before tagging someone in a post.

@Em0nM4stodon Mastodon is never private. So if safty is a concern, don't put that on a random blue- skye-bridge persons shoulders. They would probably have set up that bridge with the best of intentions.

I am not even sure there is a technical solution, inside the realm of open source, federated social media?

But one could maybe implant an individual and instance flag, signalling request not to be boosted in specific ways.

But i agree it's important and prefer not to have my stuff on bluesky

@Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange I do not like the proprietary platform Bluesky either. However Bluesky hosting information about your fediverse profile is not violating your privacy, if it was, even my instance downloading your user details would be also be a privacy violation. Or my browser caching your profile picture would be a privacy violation. The internet obviously can not function like this.

You seem to be very confused about the difference between public and private information, because you use terms like informed consent, which only apply to private information, not public information.

The things you post on the fediverse, or any public website for that matter don't endanger you, because the expectation already was that anyone in the world could read and save it.

If you are indeed discussing topics that put you in danger you should move your conversations somewhere else, a non-public place, like encrypted email or a private chat messenger.
