Referring to a playback only VHS device as a VCR bothers me more than I should care about. It did then, it still does now.

@dave Yes, and I owned one in 2017. It ran on 12v to 15v DC.

@hellomiakoda There was such a thing as a playback only device? Every VCR I remember owning had a record button.

@dave It was the entertainment in an old road tripper van. Sadly, the accompanying CRT TV was absolutely shot. I had replaced it with a little LCD TV

@hellomiakoda Intriguing. Why did it run off 12-15v DC? What was the use case?

@dave I was homeless, and used Goodwill as video rental store. I'd buy a few VHS for a buck each, watch a couple movies till I was about out of batteries, spent the night in the parking lot, and donate the tape back in the mourning before getting on the road and recharging. It was just about the only entertainment I had for about a year.

@dave And yes, by definition, every single VCR has record, and it was almost always a button.

@dave Pains me to think this rough life I found miserable was still luxury compared to what a lot of homeless endure.

@dave Amazingly, the mini fridge I ran on inverters while trapped in the damn desert, is still in service! It's in my room, with soda and half and half in it. Ice cold!
It was cheap back when I got it, before I lost my housing. Stunned it's still good!I used to get enough time on battery to keep my food cold about 6 hours, the inverter would wake me up, and it'd still stay cold long enough to make coffee and get ready to roll. Even in the dessert.
