1. This close up of a few branches of stairstep or splendid feather moss shows why it is called those names. Each moss branch is spread out full of small stems of feathery leaves, the overall effect looking a bit like an ostrich feather. The feathery branches cascade down the side of the tree stump they grow on, each one separate and spread out like steps. It looks like a carpet of glowing feathers.
