That only works a little. There were once trees in portions of what is now the Sahara Desert, but trees need water to survive. I expect we have not yet found a way to increase that area's rainfall without transforming another area into a perpetual drought zone®.-

@lnxw37j1 It can be done. China is doing it with the Gobi desert. They failed at it for two decades by doing things mostly for the sake of doing things, but then they changed tracks and made efforts to learn what worked.
You don't increase local rainfall by stealing it from elsewhere – if you manage to bind more moisture in the ground and in trees, you break the local cycle that robs you of the water you have.
