     His conclusion: authoritarian leanings reinforced by a certain kind of religion can cause people to delude themselves, to ignore information that might alert them to how they're actually harming themselves as they target others.

     The thrill of hurting someone else is all-consuming and compelling: we can applaud ripping funds we need from ourselves to build a huge police force if it polices "those others."
