I think the rumors of an A18-based MacBook are exciting, especially if you can slot in at that $650 price point. My only concern is how much Apple neuters it. @ismh86 rightfully points out the USB-C thing is one area (which I think is fine), my broader concern is RAM. I don’t think 8GB is sufficient for macOS, full stop. And that’s before you add Apple Intelligence. I don’t care if it’s $650, no Mac sold today should have under 16GB of RAM. @film_girl This feels like an slightly updated version of the $650 M1 MBA at Walmart but using a chip they just got a bunch of.

My bigger concern, candidly, would be Apple trying to do a Windows S Mode sort of bullshit. You know, where you can only run apps from the App Store. That might be totally unfounded, and it might even be unwise given the regulatory and federal court decisions, but it’s a fear nonetheless. But if Apple could get a $650 Mac with enough RAM (I’ll let the storage issue slide here and only here), that’s a winner! But I think about what they’d take away to get people to spend a few hundred more.
