I always love when Californians go abroad and come back with ‘omg in Malaysia / Indonesia people don’t recycle!!’ And I love telling them ‘well it’s because you keep sending us all your shit that actually can’t be recycled?’

You can almost see the existential crisis

I mean yes those countries have poor infra and facilities for ‘environmental best practices’. That’s also true. But it is also true that a single person from the global north consumes and wastes far more than people not in the global north, so any type of moral posturing around this really irritates me

@skinnylatte Like the cloud is just someone else's computer, recycling is just someone else's landfill.

@skinnylatte This is similar to the problem of e-waste in Oceania. Countries like Australia and NZ produce wayyy more than "less developed" nations like Fiji or Tonga. Yet the latter have to deal with the health risks that comes with this waste. https://www.abc.net.au/pacific/programs/pacificbeat/global-and-pacific-e-waste-growing/12432844

A new report has ranked Oceania as the second highest region per capita of e-waste, but the majority of those old mobile phones, computers, TVs and tablets, are actually dumped in Australia and New Zealand.
