look it’s a big tangent from the main thrust of the article, but I’m not sure “deeply religious” is a good descriptor here, at least as it’s colloquially understood — which is in reference to the Christian religion.

The beliefs & views of MAGA “conservatives” bear almost no similarity to the longer tradition of Christianity - it’s an idolatrous (& frankly heretical) sect that’s been cultivated for decades to bolster a far-right authoritarian fascist movement.

The “Jesus” depicted in the Bible would almost definitely be repulsed by & condemn its adherents.
