   I met this snail this morning. I am wondering why its trail is ‘dotted’? Was it hopping;-)

     @johnjohnston it's actually really intersting and didn't know about that behavoir.
     
     But snail essentially have 2 mode of travel, this one is a loping gait used on rough absorbant surfaces or if dehydrated to conserve fluids.
     
     it's basically tipping toe for gasteropods
