It's important to remember this isn't an accident. People ask why Millennials are such shit writers, when it's the wrong question. What happened is that during the 2010's (probably starting pre-gamergate, 2007~2009), video game companies, producers, and schools teaching game design deliberately started gatekeeping hard. You couldn't find a scholarship that wasn't explicitly for women and minorities only, or explicitly targeted them. This is probably still going on to this day, but I have not looked at scholarships in about a decade so idk.
This isn't to say "women and minorities are shit writers", but that those who found this practice distasteful probably ended up not applying. Those who did were likely filtered by the culture in those areas, which I imagine was filled with "tumblr liberals". Those who survived were either supportive of it, or learned to keep their heads down. What they loved became a job, and they did and said whatever they needed to keep their jobs.
These people were myopic. They had limited to zero real life experience or hobbies outside of gaming and television. Their personality was their political beliefs. They were spiteful and uncreative. They wanted their hobby to be taken seriously, and so sacrificed fun game play and interesting stories for being pretentious.
And so instead of hiring the best artists for the job, they hired people for the novelty of hiring them. They hired stupid women, and stupid minorities, just to reach a quota, and then they bragged about doing it.
It took a generation, but the people first recruited back then are now entering into management positions. America's creative industries are going to have decades of putting up with this fungus that they cultivated and allowed to spread.
The saving grace is that making your own games, and making money off your own games, is now easier than ever.
I'm begging you, please, learn an art. It can be writing, game design, it can be drawing or painting. Just LEARN how, and PRACTICE EVERY DAY!
This is probably the most important thing you can do with your time. I'm not even joking.
