I like the idea that a soldier who dies in battle is automatically promoted to hero-status. As if the mere fact of willingly - it's entailed when you sign up - placing yourself in that situation, is all the qualifications to be a hero one needs. Of course, this is a simplistic way of looking at things, but still..
