@darkuncle
I am reminded of an old story - I thought it was from the jargon file, but I can't seem to find it, so I'll paraphrase:
A large company had a weird hardware computing issue they had spent months trying to solve, to no avail. They finally had to call in "the expert", who looked at the guts and wiring, thought a few minutes, then cut a single wire - problem solved.
They balked when they received his $5000 bill, and demanded an itemized list of why it was so expensive if he just cut a single wire. The invoice read:
Cutting a wire: $5
Knowing which wire to cut: $4995
At a certain level - you're not paid for the work. You're paid for the skill and experience.
