KDE creates a safe haven for Windows 10 exiles.

In the context of the @Endof10 campaign, we have created a new "for" page, this time "for Windows 10 exiles":

    https://kde.org/for/w10-exiles/

In it we explain how Linux with Plasma can help users escape the deranged cycle of having to buy a new computer every time Microsoft force-upgrades their operating system.

    #Windows11 #Microsoft #endOf10

@kde@floss.social @Endof10@floss.social @kde@lemmy.kde.social Usually I'm all in favor of campaigns designed to make people get rid of Windows I'm not a big fan of how the Endof10 campaign is run.

They do not recommend any specific distribution. Instead they literally say "Search for Linux distributions for beginners to get some suggestions."

A search query like this will make you end in SEO hell and you will not any good suggestions. Please actually recommend a few distributions for you campaign instead of leaving the most important step very vague.

On top of that it talks about Linux and not GNU/Linux, while also avoiding mentioning the issues of software freedom.

@kde@floss.social @Endof10 @kde@lemmy.kde.social On the PLUS side, there ARE all those "old" laptops, tablets and computers that you can pick up really cheap to do a nice, fresh install of Linux on to. I've got 3 of them right now. Including the one I'm typing this post with.

@alandvalonline @kde@floss.social @Endof10 @kde@lemmy.kde.social My favorite feature of Windows 11 is it makes normies discard perfectly good machines that I can then take off rheir hands and put Linux on. 🤣️

Hi, I'm totally new to all this stuff, wanting to explore the world outside Google, Microsoft, Facebook, etc, etc. Do you have any pointers for a complete Linux beginner?

An important note about Linux - The plethora of distros might seem overwhelming. At the end of the day, they're all Linux and all do roughly the same things. If your distro is a bad fit, you can try another one, and almost always run the same apps you were on the other distro.
So don't fret too much on picking the "right" one.

@MichaelRobbins @alandvalonline @kde @Endof10 What is different between distros is often HOW they do those things.
Example - I can switch kernel on any of them, but I prefer the little kernel manager Manjaro has.

All of them can run on my 4U server, but OpenSuse is the distro that coopertes easily with my RAID card.

Repositories are also a bit different between distros, and update schedules. Some like to stick with well tested versions of things, others go for bleeding edge newest versions.
