    Taking a crack at unreal editor for the first time. Hitting the wall of an enormous parameter space and obviously not sure what to do without reading the documentation.

    Doing literally any action and watching what it does to my CPU is fucking insane.

      @lina allegedly unreal 5 had an enormous, disproportionate impact on project build and export times. People were reporting that build steps roughly doubled coming from UE4 (and we're talking on the scale of multiple hours).

      Working on the bleeding edge has always strained the limits of current hardware but consensus seems to be that UE5 is particularly egregious

      @PurpCat @lina also it's seriously unbelievable how much fucking disk space this uses. Just compiling the UE5 base engine had eaten up 600GB of space on my disk. A blank game with nothing in it is taking up an additional 50.

      We need to start fat shaming developers

      @PurpCat @lina I've actually hit several crashes in UE5 already with no modifications from me. Just using the basic bitch terrain editor bombed out because a sprite unexpectedly didn't load.

      I finally have a machine powerful enough to compile the thing so I'm going in and fixing bugs myself. Considering this part of the educational process.

      @lina @PurpCat yeah. I've got a 2TB drive with nothing else on it but visual studio build tools, jetbrains Rider, the UE5 source and one test project and that's filled up almost half the disk.

      I have a few spare nvmes around and I'm gonna need to install those without a doubt

      @PurpCat @RustyCrab @lina It started being shit with Black Ops III. COD was perhaps the first game series to begin the cognitively dissonant nu-gaming experience of treating the player like a retard with 30-minute tutorials, yet being as vacuously violent and safe-edgy as possible.

      @lina @PurpCat like I said
      FAT
      SHAMING

      Rust (the language) is even worse. There's a small project I use called komorebi. It literally just places some windows around your desktop and makes them look kinda nice. Compiling it will output 30 gigs worth of intermediate files.

      This is what modern programmers consider acceptable :terrydavisdancing:

      @RustyCrab @PurpCat @lina I was at a job that needed a nightly sync between international offices with deltas in the 500 to 1000 GB range; loading the data up on an SSD and "same day" shipping it was a serious consideration.

      @Coyote @PurpCat @lina yeah but that much data also starts making for bandwidth problems. The cognitive load from having to wait so long for the editor or compiler to perform any given action is real.

      Even on enterprise grade servers the experience is sluggish at best.

      @RustyCrab @PurpCat @lina In a corporate setting, it's really easy to ask IT for another hard drive, and they'll send over a dude to plug in another 2 TB SSD in under 30 minutes. The steady flow of new disks is cheaper than paying an engineer to pare back the dev install size.
