   @goldgust whenever I rec something on AO3, I update my bookmark to include a link to the rec.

   but I don't know if authors ever see those links.

   This seems like a compromise where I'm not trying to hide the rec, but not trying to be pushy about it either.

   Maybe I should actually leave a comment with a link to the rec? Or just a comment saying that I recced it?? I don't knowwwww, argh.

     @lookitmychicken You're definitely under no obligation to share recs (here I was complaining about not being able to twitter search my name lol) but I guess most authors would like to receive the comment with the link to the rec :blobThinkGlare:

     do you only bookmark and not comment? because afaik it's not possible to receive notifications for bookmarks, they are easily missed

     anyway, reccing in the first place is definitely the best thing and you already do that :D

     @goldgust I try to comment as well as bookmark, but it depends on my level of spoons. If I want to rec, and I don't have many spoons, I just do the rec.

     I guess I'm more nervous about reccing something in a way that the author doesn't like?? what if I don't get what they were going for, and I misrepresent their intent?

     I don't knowwww, these are silly reservations! I want to get over them. Perhaps I can get over them??

     @goldgust oh I also always hashtag the author's name when I post a rec, just in case they somehow find us on the fediverse (or are already here) and they look up their hashtag.

     But that's not much use for authors who aren't on the fediverse in the first place.

     @lookitmychicken yeah, exactly. It's so bold to advertise someone else's work through my own lens and who knows if the author will like how I do it! it's really just meant for my followers and whoever happens across it

     but then someone showed one of my recs to its author recently and I was told they were really pleased so....

     Tbh maybe the magic comes from discovering the rec organically/through a third person. it's like you get to see a candid reaction. and commenting with a link would take away from that

     @goldgust yes! I'm not reccing a fic to the writer -- I'm reccing it to other potential readers. The audiences for recs and comments are different.

     If I start thinking of the writer as another potential audience for the rec, it would probably change the way that I write recs.

     I still have at least 150 fics flagged as recs on AO3 that I haven't actually posted to the fediverse yet. I don't want to make it any harder for myself to write up and post those recs!
