@jessew one of the well-known foods eaten in north-western lower saxony is Grünkohl mit Pinkel (kale stew with a special type of smoked sausage called pinkel) but translated literally it's "kale and piss" :D
@jessew There is a region in Lower Saxony called "Ostfriesland" which most Germans are only 'familiar' with because they are the butt of a lot of German jokes. In these jokes they usually get the (unfair) role of stupid, backwards yockels.
@jessew I had a funny anecdote about Chemnitz, which is in... Saxony :(
Well I'll say it anyway I guess : In Chemnitz, which was renamed Karl-Marx-Stadt during the DDR, there is a huge bronze head of Karl Marx in front of the building that hosted the head of the communist party for the state. But now, this building, which also has a big bronze plate on the facade saying "Workers of all countries, unite" in 5 languages, is.... The ministry of economy.
@jessew Lower Saxony is the original Saxony (back in early medieval times).
They had great radio comedy in the form of Frühstyxradio. Oliver Kalkofe and Oliver Welke started out there. A bit low brow and often tasteless and occasionally scandalous at the time (the 90s and early aughties)
@jessew the slogan of the town Buxtehude is "Wo die Hunde mit dem Schwanz bellen" (where the dogs bark with their tail) which is based on a mistranslation between german and dutch
@jessew There's a village called Petze which means tattletale/snitch. It is now part of Sibbesse which is northeast of the 7 mountains that are mentioned in the Snow White fairytale.
@jessew "Moin" is the word used for every greeting phrase ever at any point in time, night or day.
2am Moin 5pm Moin High Noon Moin
The correct answer is either Moin or a firm, acknowledging nod towards the greeting person. Less words are better. Silence is golden. Otherwise you might get branded a Sabbelkopp.
@jessew the best club of Wolfsburg is called "Sauna-Klub" and it's located in an old heating basement for a sauna of a former indoor swimming venue which is now a cultural center. There, you can also rent the old swimming pool for big parties like e.g. weddings.
@SunDancer@jessew And people from Hamburg, or tourists who say "Moin moin!" are chatterboxes.
Ostfriesland ("East Frisia") is the westernmost part of the German North Sea coast, including the coastal islands except Wangerooge, which is part of Friesland, which is to the East of East Frisia.
@tenkoman@jessew The meeting spot in Hanover is in front of the main station and is called „unterm Schwanz“ which translates to „under the tail“ but Schwanz can also mean „dick“ which makes it more funny
That's right, at the end of 2024 there were only around 160k sheep. 🐑
For many years, there were more pigs than people in Lower Saxony. However, that changed in 2021. As of November 2024, the region had around 7 million pigs and approximately 8 million residents. 🐖
