When my oldest was 10, we unexpectedly had to put our cat to sleep. Through tears kid wailed, "Hermes, you were the best cat. I will never ever forget you. Ever. <pause> Unless I get amnesia!"
I think about this story often, about neurodivergence and what it means to be unable to lie to your dying cat
And how if it were some *other* kid's dying cat, and that kid made the same declaration without the disclaimer, my kid would feel compelled to correct them, without malice but at terrible cost
