Mastodon does this a lot better by placing a button (okay it looks like a link but it acts like a button, but that's a different issue) on a single post, and then it only translates that post

But this is still not great because it doesn't work a lot of the time and it takes the posting language at face value

My workflow if you implement machine translation:

      Go to website
      Read text
Try to ascertain whether it's machine translated
Go look for the option where I can turn it off
If that option doesn't exist, go to your house and cover it in toilet paper
If it does exist, finally turn it off
      Finally read the content
If there's a bit I don't understand, right click and translate

My workflow if you don't implement machine translation:

      Go to website
      Read content
If there's a bit I don't understand, right click and translate

Automatic translation as a website feature is a fucking monolingual Anglo-ass brainworm and nothing else.

Also, stop assuming my language preference based on my geographic location (I assume). Not everyone in Germany speaks German. Some people in Germany speak English. I'm bilingual, you fuck.

You are going through huge effort to downgrade the content of your site by several orders of magnitude.

Your built-in machine translation is always gonna be inferior to just copying the text to deepl or fucking google translate. You're just disorienting your user and making it harder for them to access the actual content of the site

If you're a web developer who does this: stop. Your website is clearly done and it cannot be improved anymore. Why else would you implement this user-insulting antifeature? Go find another job. Or clock in for work and go dig in your garden instead of fucking up your website
