@AndrewFork normal everyday chinese? 70% thinks of him as a great hero, other 30% dont have a strong feeling either way. less than 0.1% will have very negative view of him, mainly because they are fringe people, either super autistic about internal politics of post civil war CPC or straight up traitors trying to make a dollar.

Great man or no, his singular contribution doesnt affect the overall result as much as the contribution of all chinese. increased longevity and quality of life for the entire population. maintained chinese sovereignty (soviet) and prevented the balkanization of china (warlords, civil war, 8 colonial armies).

Think of it as voting using gun. if KMT had majority support of the people, good governance and fair laws why would they lose to chinese peasants who arent getting paid to fight? out gunned and out supplied 10 to 1?

The chinese respect him so damn much is because he didnt 180 after securing victory and betray the people, as KMT and Bei Yang govs did. Statesmen and scientists who came after him contributed so much more only because he won and stabilized china. So yeah, he is a hero that founded new china.

Evil dont even come close, he didnt invade anyone or order the killing of civilians. Minority races and religions got unfair protections, the hui muslims who famously fought for KMT and did massacres didnt get what they deserve (total ethnic cleansing). The japanese puppet emperor didnt get executed or exiled he got given a job. KMT members who surrendered werent purged from existence (unlike what they did to CPC members.

I may have asked this before, but I was watching this white guy talk about Chinese weapons and he said some not very nice things about Mao. And it got me thinking about how the average Chinese thinks of Mao, if at all. Do people think he was a great hero, a necessary evil or what?
