   Supposedly smart liberals continue championing the lab leak conspiracy theory because "China bad," basically, which gives me a sense of how deep xenophobia and anti-scientific thinking have penetrated elite circles and the supposed intelligentsia.

     My diagnostic sense of the US is that there are no serious people in charge of anything, anywhere in this country, no one who really believes in science, facts, and basic human dignity, that we've been taken over by people who will print fake studies and then treat them as holy texts, and that the only difference between many liberals and fascists these days is the degree of rationalization involved.

     Historically, that's what the US has always been: a bunch of greedy, stupid racists and their victims. The era of US scientific leadership, such as it was, driven by Cold War competition, is effectively dead. It's the Gilded Age again, baby, and any science or human rights which get in the way will be demolished.
