Platkin on the Arrest of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka “Arresting public officials for peacefully protesting violates the most basic principles of our democracy. The arrest of Mayor Baraka earlier this afternoon outside Delaney Hall in Newark is deeply troubling. People peacefully exercising their right to free speech and assembly should never be targeted for opposing the government’s policies. To our knowledge, no state or local law enforcement were involved in this arrest. Like those gathered today to protest outside of Delaney Hall, my office has remained steadfast in our defense of the state law prohibiting private immigration detention centers in our communities. We defended that law before a federal appeals court last week, and we will continue to stand up for the civil rights of our residents.”

  Ooo, a strongly worded statement.
  Yes, it's a necessary step. But the governor should go to Newark *tonight* and demand his release without charge. Take some community leaders. Lead a vigil outside the ICE facility.

  The problem with this story starts w/its very 1st sentence: the mayor of Newark was NOT participating in a protest at the ICE faculty.
  He was there exercising his warrant as mayor along w/ members of Congress who likewise were exercising their oversight duty & authority to investigate how the #ICE facility, which they claimed was illegal, was being run. The mayor, who's Black & a candidate for #NJgov, was allowed to enter the gate, take a few steps inside, then was told he

  was trespassing & immediately retreated back to the public side of the gate. After which a cloud of #ICE officers descended on him & the Congressional delegation he was with, arresting & jailing him while pushing around & roughly treating the members of Congress with him, incl 80yo Bonnie Watson Coleman.
  They were NOT there to protest.
