     ‼️ #Prevost, who has taken the name #Pope #LeoXIV, has shared several highly critical posts about #Trump & his #immigration policies on X.

     One scathing post Prevost retweeted read: “There is nothing remotely Christian, American, or morally defensible about a policy that takes children away from their parents & warehouses them in cages. This is being carried out in our name & the shame is on us all.”

     At the same time, #Prevost was also entrusted w/the pastoral care of Our Lady Mother of the Church, later established as the parish of Saint Rita (1988–1999), in a poor suburb of the city, & was parish admin of Our Lady of Monserrat 1992–1999.
     In 1999, he was elected Provincial Prior of the Augustinian Province of “Mother of Good Counsel” in #Chicago, & 2½ yrs later, the Ordinary General Chapter of the Order of Saint Augustine, elected him as Prior General, confirming him in 2007 for a 2nd term.

     The following year, #Prevost joined the mission in Trujillo, also in #Peru, as director of the joint formation project for Augustinian candidates from the vicariates of Chulucanas, Iquitos, & Apurímac.

     Over the course of 11 yrs, he served as prior of the community (1988–1992), formation director (1988–1998), & instructor for professed members (1992–1998), & in the Archdiocese of Trujillo as judicial vicar (1989–1998) & professor of Canon Law, Patristics, & Moral Theology at the Major Seminary…

     In #Rome, he was ordained a priest on June 19, 1982, at Augustinian College of Saint Monica….

     #Prevost obtained his licentiate in 1984; & the following year, while preparing his doctoral thesis, was sent to the Augustinian mission in Chulucanas, Piura, #Peru (1985–1986). In 1987, he defended his thesis on "The Role of the Local Prior in the Order of Saint Augustine" & was appointed vocation & missions director of the Augustinian Province of “Mother of Good Counsel” in Olympia Fields, #Illinois.

     On Sept 1 of the same year, #Pope #LeoXIV entered the novitiate of the Order of Saint Augustine (OSA) in #SaintLouis, in the Province of Our Lady of Good Counsel of Chicago, & made his first profession on September 2, 1978. On August 29, 1981, he made his solemn vows.

     He received his theological education at the Catholic Theological Union in #Chicago. At the age of 27, he was sent by his superiors to #Rome to study Canon Law at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas (Angelicum).

     #Pope #LeoXIV, the new Bishop of Rome, was born on Sept 14, 1955, in #Chicago, Illinois, to Louis Marius Prevost, of #French & #Italian descent, & Mildred Martínez, of #Spanish descent. He has 2 brothers, Louis Martín & John Joseph.

     He spent his childhood & adolescence w/his family & studied first at the Minor Seminary of the Augustinian Fathers & then at Villanova University in #Pennsylvania, where in 1977 he earned a Degree in #Mathematics & also studied #Philosophy.

     Prevost served as a bishop in Chiclayo, in northwestern #Peru, 2015–2023.

     #PopeFrancis brought him to Rome that year to head the Vatican office in charge of choosing which priests should serve as #Catholic bishops across the globe.

     Prevost said during a 2023 Vatican press conference: "Our work is to enlarge the tent & to let everyone know they are welcome inside the Church."

     “I’m really proud,” said Noelle Neis, a childhood friend who, w/her 4 siblings, grew up in the same parish as the Prevosts, the old St. Mary of the Assumption on Chicago’s border w/Dolton.

     “To think about we knew him when he was a kid,” Neis said. “He’s just like one of us. Before it was so out of reach for anybody.”

     I wonder, given #RobertPrevost’s many years spent in #SouthAmerica, if the choice was related at all to the current cruelty of Trump’s #immigration policies & #deportations of #LatinAmericans. [he is also a Peruvian citizen]

     Notable that after #Pope #LeoXIV gave his remarks in Italian he spoke in #Spanish, but the Chicago born #American did not speak in English.

     [my aunt just texted me that Pope Leo’s dad was the principal at her grade school in Chicago Heights. She’s Italian & very excited]

     Cardinal #RobertPrevost, 69, is an #American who has spent much of his career as a #missionary in #Peru, is relatively unknown.

     Made a cardinal by #PopeFrancis in 2023, he has given few media interviews & rarely speaks in public.

     Originally from #Chicago, he has attracted interest from his peers because of his quiet style & support for Francis' 12yr papacy, especially his commitment to #SocialJustice issues.

     Holy #WhiteSmoke Batman, we have a new #pope!

     The identity of the new pontiff is not yet known. #Vatican officials are expected to announce his name in Latin from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica shortly.

     Cardinal Dominique Mamberti, a 73-year-old Frenchman born in Morocco, is expected to make the announcement — unless he himself is elected pope.

     Then the new pope himself will appear & address the crowd.

     During the interview, Vance said, “There is a Christian concept that you love your family & then you love your neighbor, & then you love your community, & then you love your fellow citizens, & then after that, prioritize the rest of the world.
