thunderbird users: does this software have any way to figure out why it refuses to download mail via IMAP, or am i supposed to divine it out via prophetic dream?

the way to find out why thunderbird refuses to log into IMAP is, apparently, this:
$ export MOZ_LOG=IMAP:5,timestamp MOZ_LOG_FILE=thunderbirdlog
$ thunderbird(it didn't like it that the certificate for imaps:// has expired and chose to not surface this fact in any way whatsoever)

@whitequark I assume something must be broken in thunderbird imap; my world's most boring bone stock ISP e-mail setup with it also stopped working recently and I haven't bothered to figure out why
