   ArsT: One doesn't usually think of this community [Silicon Valley folks] as being anti-science. Yet in your book you argue that these futuristic visions aren't based on sound science at all, which seems paradoxical.

   Becker: They actually have a great contempt for expertise. They don't see it as necessary because they think that they're the smartest people who've ever lived [...] If they were wrong about anything, then why would they have been so financially successful?

     "Making Mars as habitable as Antarctica during the polar night would be the greatest technological undertaking humanity has ever taken by many orders of magnitude, in order to create a place that nobody would want to live, and where the gravity would still be too low. It's a deeply unpleasant place."

     "There was a really good article about this in The New York Times by Tressie McMillan Cottom, where she said that AI is "mid." It's not great. It's not terrible. It's just mediocre. "
