Here's a great analysis of the Runcorn by-election from @CherylMorgan which seeks to correct various misapprehensions about why Reform won, whose votes they gained, and why Labour (and the media) are drawing the wrong conclusions.

And its admirably concise for a busy Saturday morning.

So, Reform has won the Runcorn and Helsby by-election. Judging by what I am seeing in the news and on social media, this is a major defeat for Labour whose voters, we are told, are deserting the party en masse for Reform. ‘The rise in the #Reform vote can be almost entirely explained by people deserting the #Tories for Reform. The number of people voting #Green has gone down slightly, not up. The major story seems to be people deserting Labour in droves, but choosing not to transfer their vote to any left-leaning party.’

Left leaning folks are not voting…it’s apathy that Labour needs to counter, not engage in a rightwing race to bottom.
