     @pwm @creamqueen i got my film roll processed at a local place and they gave me back JPGs, which looked pretty good since they probably used max quality. webp is just a more space efficient jpg so i'd be fine with webp images

     @creamqueen @pwm very true, it's hard to live your life knowing that someone is going to find something you like and become a fan of it.
     nobody is stopping you from converting webp (marginally better lossy format) to jpg (lossy format), your crusade against image formats can be solved with converters, which i'm sure you are smart enough to learn how to use

     @twl @pwm are you familiar with the term "gatekeeping?"
     It is a lot like your body's immune system. When a harmful pathogen enters your body, it fights back to get it out of there.
     Gatekeeping is a very important part of hobbies as to keep bad actors (webp file users) out of your passion.
     Another good example is with cars, you should gatekeep people who do stance builds.

     @twl @pwm it is not okay for people to get into hobbies for the wrong reason.
     The car example again, people buy cars then destroy the suspension on them so the wheels are at an absurd negative angle tilting so nearly the sidewall of the tire is the only contact patch on the road.
     This is bad for multiple reasons but the main ones being that is is ugly and horrendously unsafe.
     It is important to keep these people out of communities.

     @creamqueen @pwm I don't rice cars or do shit like that but I don't think comparing people who just compress their images differently is the same as doing shit that can actually damage your equipment. There's enough nuance to how people actually take a photo, as in what body and lens they use, what type of film or what gay filters they put on in photoshop, and you can say trends in how new people to the hobby approach things are ruining the experience for you, but I don't think webp is harming you in any way
     
     Unless your photo editor still can't open them for some reason...
     
     I there's way better examples of gatekeeping being good to stop shit other than... webp.
     
     i do understand not liking shit because you can't use it, i do it with av1, I would love to have everything in av1 if i had hardware to encode it with and if the majority of devices could play it *looks at apple*
