@poopernova Smart kids. Knowing when to slack and when to apply yourself is good preparation for university.

@Arkana @poopernova You quite quickly begin to realize that public schooling is geared towards the lowest common denominator and that they hand out busywork in lieu of any sort of real tutoring.
And the ever-present female shame based "authority" meant to keep us in line is a spirit crusher.

@poopernova I realized this pretty early on. I hated school and when I had to do a book report I just wrote the bare minimum. They started to think I was retarded, but I took a test and in 3rd grade I had a 6th grade reading level.
It wasn't until 4th grade that I settled in and actually tried to raise my grade because I was given money for each A I got, and that was my only way to buy new video games

@poopernova@varishangout.net This could be solved by separating high achieving students (separate classroom and teacher) and recommending them to go to competitions.

High achievers will do good work because if they don't they get sent to the retard zone

@skylar@misskey.yandere.love @poopernova@varishangout.net My primary school did this and it was successful.

For context the Hungarian education system basically is:primary school
      take standardized test
      secondary school based on results
      take standardized test
uni based on resultsget sent to retard zone
everything is easy and takes no effortThe people who were in the retard zone didn't get admitted to gypsy-free secondary schools because they couldn't learn.don't have to go to some cringe competition on a saturday where the only prize is the school gets a stupid trophyCompetitions weren't mandatory just recommended.
I went to a lot of competitions.
When it was on a weekend I didn't have to go to school on Friday.
I could negotiate because school needs trophies I need days off.

      Competition days were:get up later
      go to meeting point
      talk to friends on train/bus
      competition (1-2 hour)
      talk to friends on train/bus
go homeOther days were:get up early
      go to school
      pain (6-8 hours)
go home~10% of my school days were competition days
      This made primary school bearable
