Sometimes I get really mad at the $15 bagel in San Francisco / Oakland but that food in every major global city sort of keeps pace with each other, because the business of commercial real estate is full of the same parasitic private equity global commons.

    Same shit everywhere*

    * I randomly define this as any city with a nonstop flight from Hong Kong / London / New York

You know the concept of ‘shoppy shops’ — there are also brandy brands, like the Graza olive oil, Fishwife cans, doesn’t matter the brand there’s the same brandy brand sold in the same shoppy shop next to the same industrial chic coffeey coffee shops

Thinking of the upper middle class elites I know in Singapore who vacation in Tokyo and Paris like it’s the next town they drive to, these consumer goods serve the same type of global asshole (I count myself among them)

Even in Beijing and Bangalore you can see the same things. Same food, same decor

@skinnylatte noticed this recently… a small boutique with obscure edgy-humor products, then a near-identical selection in a shop 600 miles away. “Hmm, who’s your wholesaler?’

        Shoppy shop
Shoppy shop, also known as a boutique grocer, artisanal market or curated mini-mart are small, often independent retail stores that offer unique upscale gourmet foods that are often prepackaged and locally sourced. Shoppy shops tend to emphasize quality, sustainability, and artisanal small businesses and other hard-to-find or exclusive items that may be gifted. Shoppy shops commodify authenticity by emphasizing their small boutique nature as a brand strategy and provide startups a physical retail outlet. In response to Shoopy shop marketing, some private labels have begun rebranding to better match their counterparts. The term was coined in 2022 by Neil Shankar on TikTok under the username "Tall Neil" and popularized by New York magazine's Grub Street in response to boutiques selling artisanal foods such as olive oil and tinned fish. I think an interesting way to track this would be to build a ‘third wave coffee’ index just like the Big Mac Index. How much does an oat milk latte cost in every major global city? I think we will find it costs around the same. In absolute amounts
