You know people cite that paperclip AI thought experiment all the time, the adjacent gray goo as well, but... We are already (mostly unwittingly) neck deep in such a scenario. However it's our own "intelligence" that is to blame and not an artificial one. And of course I'm talking about plastic, which is in all likelihood the 2nd biggest threat to human survival next to climate change.
