   Malaysian right now specifically refers to the sovereign country north of Singapore, although it also has a presence in north ‘Borneo’; Java is part of Indonesia

     @skinnylatte I *knew* I'd get that wrong and I thank you for setting me right. I know very little about that part of the world and I suspect my learning has just begun.

     In the book the author quotes the contemporaneous (British) actors referring to everything east to the Phillipines as "India."

     @mralancooper Nicholas Tarling’s Cambridge History of Southeast Asia (and anything else by Tarling, and go from there) is a good overview.

     Also my A Levels SE Asian history text :$
